| Susan Morris's new work appears to be photographic, but it also references film, video, painting and digital media. Regular lines of white shapes on black read at first as enlarged filmstrip frames and it takes another look to realise they are the illuminated windows of housing estates. Every window turns out to be made of different colours as though each was an intricate painting floating on black, The image dissolves as you go up close, breaking down into a pixelated blur. The process of passing the image through various stages of reproduction pushes it to a limit where it begins to break down into sumptuous colour. The rigid structure of the housing block anchors the abstraction and keeps the beauty in order. |
